Women In Tragedy: The Cave Sessions Vol. 1: Dead Actress

Life is nice to you, some days. When you discover an artist like Bob McCully by a review on an anonymous blog – one of the tons present on blogspot – you simply realize how magic internet is and how wonderful is the period of history we’re living in (for popular music, at least).

The Canadian Bob McCully is principally known for his project Women In Tragedy. With this moniker, he released more than thirty albums, splits and collaborations in compilations since 2006 till now (yes, more than thirty), always in very limited editions by small, honest, brave music labels. Anyhow, the music quality isn’t affected by the quantity of music recorded. The few releases that I had the luck to hear can be described as a sort of electro-pop music with a psychedelic attitude filtered with lo-fi garage and post-everything experiences, but the judgement on Women In Tragedy musical genos (γένος) varies from listener to listener. But in the end, all you have to know about Bob McCully’s Women in Tragedy is that you’re gonna like the music.

Some weeks ago, I was reading Women In Tragedy myspace. Bob will surely understand if I quote here his words:

Since my last post, which was in June, I have finished three albums:

Dead Actress

Dead End Trails

My Favourite Actress

The first, I’ve sent out to labels, to friends, to see what happens.

Ditto to the second, although it is more of a shorter EP and was originally intended to come out on cassette on a label who has to go on hiatus.

The third is an album exclusively made for my girlfriend Stephanie Carpanini for her birthday. Who knows though, maybe it’ll be available one day, but I’m focusing on getting the first two out.

I took contact with Bob and I’ve asked him to release these albums via Plasticrane, and he has been enthusiast since the beginning with this idea. He wrote me:

You’re welcome to release all three albums, because they were all recorded around the same time, I feel like they could work well together as Vol. 1, 2, and 3 of a series. Especially since Dead End Trails is 4 songs, much like an EP, and Dead Actress is 6 songs and quite a bit longer. My Favourite Actress is actually 14 songs and very long, it contains a lot of ambient interludes as well as some really cute pop songs. So they all are quite different albums but I recorded them all at my last apartment, which was a very dark and lonely basement, so you could even call all three albums the Basement Sessions, Vol. 1,2 & 3.

These albums were to much good not to be produced on Plasticrane. So, we are announcing now that Plasticrane will release these three albums in a serialized way: each month since now, we’ll release an album of Women In Tragedy’s series, which has been called (by Bob – with an afterthought) The Cave Sessions.

Ladies and gentlemen, in this glorious month of May 2010, Plasticrane is proud to present you The Cave Sessions Vol. 1: Dead Actress, with a stunning artwork by G.

Check the releases!

Caucasian Frequencies – Imaginary field recordings from Caucasian and Middle East AM Radio

We were. We are. We’ll be. But Xmas night stops the passing time. We opened our toolbox and decided to take a long vacation from paranoia. Do you remember the tale about the blue and the red pill? We choosed to leave, in the sweetest manner. A deep, acid and warm set of angelic analogue sounds brought us far away, between the Bible and Hollywood. Felt like we were hearing the AM radio: incomprensible voices, sound pitches, choires of a distorted reality. We closed our eyes, pulled the plug and started to see lands we have never seen before, in few hours. Sand. Snow. Mountains. Cities. Skies. Cement. Animals. Military posts. Rivers. Blood. Trucks. Women. Poor peasants. Mercedes. Old dacias. Where have we gone?
When we came back, we understood we’ve been so far from home. We choose to present here our dreamy Orientalia speculations, instead of concrete Eastern impressions. The capability to imagine is still important for us. Fortress Europe already decided our reality. But we choosed to dream.
Welcome to Caucasian Frequencies, Plasticrane last effort to preserve an alternative Vision.
Proudly,
Z & G

Thank you and Goodnight…

Lost Highway - Thank you and goodnightEp - cover“Dear Plasticrane fellows, in the 20th eve of Berlin Wall fall,
we’d like to commemorate one of the band which will remains in Plasticrane’s heart:
LOST HIGHWAY.
The band disbanded a lot of time ago but, shortly after the recording of HUMANA EP
(Plasticrane, 2008), the band produced two other songs.
But then, Lost Highway died and rot. Its body melt with the soil, and became part of the universe. This Ep is Lost Highway last epitaph, which lays in the green plains of northern Italy, precisely on Plasticrane’s server. Visit it in your daily musical excursions and leave a flower in its remembrance.
Thank you and goodnight…Ep!”

W.O.K. – SEMELLE O.S.T.

Wok_Semelle

Dear all,

Thirty Tyrants Prod & Plasticrane Prod. are proud to present the SEMELLE Original Soundtrack, composed and recorded by Wheel of Knowledge for Andrea Zanoli & Marco Marconcini’s Semelle movie, who won several prizes at the Location Piacenza Film Festival, Italy, in which it has been released  from 13th to 19th of June 2009.

Wheel of Knowledge thought it was worth the less to release something superb for this superb movie, and, in one week of work, the first results recorded joined the movie images; tons of sounds has been of course roughly cut of the movie, since WOK composed 40 minutes of music more then needed; in the movie, you can listen only a part of the entire soundtrack; but then, after champagne and expensive cigars have been consumed and the movie-crew get mad in Piacenza’s worst bars, WOK worked again on the music, choosing which sound would better fit to the imagination of the original thesis of the movie, which represented a world under control by police and by some infamous fascist patrols, a world in which the curfew begin when the sun set and in which idiotic mass media information reports politicians idiotic statements.

The meaning of the movie, which is that the beauty of the world is still present around us, for all «those who [didn’t] bartered their freedom for the safety to live under lock and key but [for those] who preferred the risk to be free», is widely represented in WOK music, who released a long track (32mins – the longest track ever released by WOK) composed in more parts like a sort of stream of consciousness on the subject described above. The second and third tracks, instead, were explicitly commissioned by the movie directors, while the third one, originally intended to be the soundtrack for the rebels’ pursuit scene, wasn’t add to the movie at last.

Enjoy yourself with SEMELLE movie (look here below) and have a nice hear!
